5 Roles Nobody Wanted to Play

Not every movie role is a dream come true. Some parts are so strange, demanding, or controversial that even the most famous actors don’t want to touch them. These are the roles that got rejected over and over — until someone finally took the plunge. Let’s look at **5 roles that nobody wanted to play.**

**1. Neo – *The Matrix***

Before Keanu Reeves became *the* Chosen One, almost every A-list actor turned this role down. Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio — they all passed. Why? Because the script was just too bizarre and complicated. Fortunately, Keanu took the leap, and the rest is sci-fi history.

**2. Pennywise – *It (2017)***

Playing a creepy clown that haunts kids (and adults) is not exactly a dream role. Many actors found it too dark and disturbing. Eventually, Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd stepped up, and well… he scared the living daylights out of us!

**3. Hulk – *The Incredible Hulk (2008)***

After the mixed reception of the 2003 *Hulk* film, nobody wanted to try their luck with the big green guy again. The character was a box-office risk. Edward Norton finally took the role, only to be replaced by Mark Ruffalo in later MCU films.

**4. Christian Grey – *Fifty Shades of Grey***

The steamy (and controversial) nature of this role scared off many actors, including Charlie Hunnam, who dropped out after being cast. The fear of being judged or typecast was too much. Jamie Dornan eventually accepted the challenge, for better or worse.

**5. Jesus – *The Passion of the Christ***

Mel Gibson’s intense and brutal vision for *The Passion of the Christ* made a lot of actors hesitate to take on the role of Jesus. Jim Caviezel eventually took it on, despite the physical toll and the controversy surrounding the film. It was a role that would haunt him for years.

**Outro**

Sometimes the roles that seem too risky end up defining careers. These actors took the plunge, and whether it was a success or not, they’ve left a lasting impact on the world of cinema.
